Chapel Hill, N.C. (May 11, 2020) — A panel of experts convened by UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School and its affiliated Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise will be offering a press briefing via webinar on recent economic data releases which show the nation’s largest ever declines in business activity, employment and aggregate wages. Join tomorrow, Tuesday, May 12, at 11 a.m. EDT to hear from the following experts:

Kenan Institute Executive Director Professor Greg Brown will provide an overview of the latest business activity data, including his interpretation of what these numbers mean for the state of the U.S. economy as business leaders and policymakers consider safe and appropriate next steps.

UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School Professor Elena Simintzi will analyze data from the Initial Unemployment Claims and the U.S. Employment Situation reports, touching on the wide variance in effects on workers by demographics including sex, age, ethnicity and educational attainment.

UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School Professor Saravanan Kesavan will discuss the economic necessity of rapidly restarting the retail sector, while incorporating stringent safety measures that will change the way businesses care for their employees as well as their consumers.

Kenan Institute Research Director Professor Christian Lundblad will provide a GDP forecast for the second quarter and offer policy prescriptions as state and local economies look to reopen.

Each speaker will provide a brief overview from his or her respective area of expertise, citing applicable emerging research and data, before the floor is opened for questions from the press. For a link to participate, email MacKenzie Babb.
