Multifamily Workforce Housing Development Roundtable

Workforce (moderate income) housing remains a critical area of need across the State of North Carolina. Without government subsidies, developers are challenged to deliver a multifamily for-rent product accessible to those who earn 80%-120% of Area Median Income.

Building on their previous efforts to address this deficiency, the Wood Center for Real Estate Studies, in partnership with the Kenan Institute for Private Enterprise, will be convening a roundtable of selected participants within the multifamily development process. These participants will engage in a conversation focused on creating a model for the delivery of a multifamily for-rent community in Chapel Hill that would be affordable for a teacher making $50,000 per year (the average for an elementary school teacher in the area). The goal will be to identify and catalogue the measures needed to design and build such a product.

The roundtable conversation will be preceded by a brief talk from UNC Kenan-Flagler Professor Andra Ghent regarding her latest research into housing affordability across the country.

Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise

Fundamental to our belief in a free society is an economic system described as “free enterprise” which is dependent upon individual initiative. This encompasses social and ethical standards derived from this system and embodied in a democratic society.

The Frank Hawkins Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise fosters mutual understanding and appreciation between members of the private enterprise sector, the academic community, and their government, and to encourage cooperative efforts among these groups.

The Kenan Institute serves these communities as a national center for scholarly research, joint exploration of issues, and course development all associated with the principal theme of preservation, encouragement, and understanding of private enterprise.
