Reggie Townsend, vice president of the Data Ethics Practice at SAS, spoke on “Responsible Innovation, Responsible Innovators” in the Kenan Center Dining Room on November 4.

After explaining the involvement of SAS in artificial intelligence, Townsend said he intended to provide a nuanced view of “an area where we cannot afford to think in binaries.”

“l don’t think that we’re going to have the great society where computers do all the things for us, and we just sit on the beach and write poems,” he said. “Nor do I think that we’re going to inherit a society where we are subservient to droids and we are some science fiction movie.”

The Dean’s Speaker Series is hosted by the Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise in partnership with UNC Kenan-Flagler and is made possible through the generous support of the Archie K. Davis Endowment.
