Yunzhi Hu’s research interests focus on financial intermediation, corporate finance and macro finance.
His current work explains various economic recoveries patterns from the perspective of bank lending standards and entrepreneur entry.
Dr. Hu also has studied managers’ incentives in choosing asset “pledgeability” and the implications on financing cycles.
His teaching interests include strategic economics.
He received his PhD in financial economics from the University of Chicago Department of Economics and Booth School of Business. He also earned an MA in economics at the University of Chicago. He earned an MA and a BA in economics and a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Peking University.
Bin Hu’s research interests include understanding the impact of various structures and incentives on supply chain formation, and designing effective and practically implementable mechanisms to manage supply chains.
He is also interested in the operational impact of technology and product innovation process.
His research has been published in Manufacturing & Service Operations Management.
Dr. Hu currently teaches business analytical applications in the undergraduate program. He taught undergraduate operations management at the University of Michigan before he joined UNC Kenan-Flagler.
Dr. Hu received his doctoral degree in business administration from Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan, and his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the School of Mathematical Sciences at Peking University.
Jeff Hoopes studies how taxpayers respond to tax laws and changes in tax enforcement. He examines issues at the intersection of accounting, public economics and finance.
He has expertise in both corporate and individual taxation as well as tax administration and compliance.
Dr. Hoopes teaches classes that deal with taxes and business strategy, and how tax policy affects taxpayer decisions and the economy.
His research has been published in The Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting Research, Journal of Financial Economics, American Economic Journal: Economic Policy and National Tax Journal.
Dr. Hoopes serves on the Academic Research Advisory Board of the UNC Tax Center and the Journal of the American Taxation Association editorial board.
He is an economist with the Research Analysis and Statistics Division of the Internal Revenue Service and a CPA with an active license in the state of Colorado.
He received his PhD in business administration from the University of Michigan. He received his MAcc with a tax emphasis from Brigham Young University, where he also graduated with a BS in accounting.
Organizational climate, organizational change, leadership and modeling the influence of organizational factors on individual behavior and performance are the focus of research and consulting for Dave Hofmann.
An award-winning researcher and teacher in organizational behavior and leadership, Dr. Hofmann is academic director of the Leadership Initiative. He is the former area chair of organizational behavior and associate dean of the MBA Program.
His research played a key role in the organizational changes instituted at NASA after the Columbia accident through an organizational and safety culture assessment instrument he developed in partnership with Behavioral Science Technologies, Inc. He received a Fulbright grant to study errors and safety issues in organizations with a colleague in Germany and a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation grant to investigate error management and organizational learning on nursing units.
The real-world relevance of his research was recognized by the American Psychological Association (APA) Decade of Behavior Research award. The APA honored the practical application of his research investigating leadership issues in high-risk industries, and he presented his findings at a Congressional briefing. Dr. Hofmann also received the Yoder-Heneman Research award from the Society of Human Resource Management.
Dr. Hofmann has consulted, conducted applied research and led executive workshops with a variety of organizations, including A.E. Staley Manufacturing Corporation, Aker Gulf Marine, Behavioral Science Technologies, Bell Atlantic, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Carrier Corporation/United Technologies, Citibank, Dentsply, Eli Lilly Corporation, ExxonMobil, Maplehurst Bakeries, National Multi Housing Association, Sony-Ericsson, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Army, U.S. Navy and U.S. Postal Service.
He is a fellow of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology and the American Psychological Society.
He earned his PhD in industrial and organizational psychology from Pennsylvania State University, a master’s degree in industrial and organizational psychology from the University of Central Florida and a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Furman University.
Brad Hendricks studies the causes and effects of corporate disclosure, financial regulation, initial public offerings and entrepreneurship.
His research has been published in leading accounting and strategy journals, including the Journal of Accounting Research, The Accounting Review, Review of Accounting Studies, Management Science, Organization Science, Strategic Management Journal, MIT Sloan Management Review and Harvard Business Review. His work has been honored with the 2021 Glenn McLaughlin Prize for Research in Accounting and Ethics, the 2021 Bullard Faculty Research Impact Award and the Morgan Stanley Prize for Best Paper at the 2021 Review of Accounting Studies Conference.
His research is regularly featured in the national media. His work or comments have been cited by The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg Businessweek, The Washington Post, MarketWatch, Fast Company, Yahoo! News, Fortune and Forbes, among other outlets.
Dr. Hendricks teaches courses on financial reporting and the foundations of business thought to undergraduate and graduate students. He is an award-winning teacher. He received the 2016 and 2022 Weatherspoon Award for Teaching Excellence in the Master of Accounting Program.
He serves on the Kenan Scholars Board of Mentors and previously was a board member for Carolina for the Kids, the largest student-run philanthropy in North Carolina.
Before joining UNC Kenan-Flagler, he worked as an accountant for a startup technology company and as a CPA at Ernst & Young.
Dr. Hendricks received a Ph.D. in business administration from the University of Michigan’s Stephen M. Ross School of Business. He received master’s and bachelor’s degrees in accounting from the University of Utah, where he graduated with high honors.
The research of Olga Hawn lies at the intersection of strategy and organization theory, business and society.
In particular, Dr. Hawn is engaged in multidisciplinary research on non-market strategy, including environmental, social and corporate governance activities of the firm with a focus on the strategic impact of such activities, their antecedents and consequences in developed and emerging markets.
Other interests include international expansion of multinationals from emerging markets, such as how firms from BRICS can succeed in cross-border M&As and overcome the negative perceptions caused by their origin as well as the role of business incubators in emerging markets.
Dr. Hawn’s teaching interests include strategy, global strategy and emerging markets, non-market strategy, corporate sustainability and responsibility. An award-winning teacher at UNC Kenan-Flagler, she received honorable mentions for the 2015 and 2016 Page Prize for Excellence in Sustainability Business Education for her MBA and PhD courses in sustainability strategy.
Her research has been published in the Academy of Management Review, Strategic Management Journal, Academy of Management Journal and Research Policy. She serves on the board of the Strategic Management Journal, which presented her with the outstanding editorial board member award in 2014.
The Social Issues in Management Division of the Academy of Management gave her the best paper award in 2012. She was a finalist for the Haynes Prize for the Most Promising Scholar Under 40 from the Academy of International Business in 2014.The Alliance for Research on Corporate Sustainability (ARCS) honored her with annual conference outstanding paper awards in 2014, 2015 and 2016.
Prior to joining UNC, Dr. Hawn taught strategy and policy at Boston University.
She received her PhD from Duke, a master’s degree in management research from Saïd Business School at Oxford University, and a master’s degree in international business and a BA in economics from the Plekhanov Russian University of Economics.
John R. M. Hand is the Robert March and Mildred Borden Hanes Distinguished Professor at UNC Kenan-Flagler.
With wide ranging interests in accounting, entrepreneurship and finance, Dr. Hand’s current research focuses on equity analysts’ financial statement forecasts and valuation models, the identities and economic importance of multidimensional stock return predictive signals, and what hedge funds tell their investors. He is co-author of “Intangible Assets: Values, Measures and Risks” (Oxford University Press, 2003) with Baruch Lev of New York University. Dr. Hand has twice won the American Accounting Association’s competitive manuscript competition for his scholarship.
He teaches in the MBA, Masters of Accounting, Undergraduate, PhD and Executive Development Programs. He received the 2013 UNC Kenan-Flagler Weatherspoon Award for MAC Teaching and the 2008 Weatherspoon Distinguished Award for MBA Teaching.
Dr. Hand served as associate dean of UNC Kenan-Flagler’s top-ranked Master of Accounting Program from 2007-2011. He serves as treasurer on the board of trustees of Trinity School of Durham and Chapel Hill. He received his PhD and his MBA with honors from the University of Chicago. He earned his B.Sc. at the Bristol University, England, where he graduated first in his class and with highest honors.
Mustafa N. Gültekin’s work focuses on investments, portfolio theory, asset pricing models, financial modeling, valuation, and risk management.
He teaches applied investment management, financial modeling, valuation and corporate restructuring, and financial markets. Other areas of expertise include international finance, mortgage backed securities, and asset-liability management.
Dr. Gültekin has served as a consultant to major corporations in the United States and abroad. He is a limited partner at the Blackethouse Group LLC, partner and senior advisor to Morning Meeting Inc., a financial modeling and consulting group, and a consultant to the Community First Investment Risk Evaluation (CFIRE) team of Community First Financial Group. He served on the boards of Belltower Advisors, LLC, a hedge fund, Clockworks Therapeutics Inc., a biotech company, and Ardic Tech, Inc., an ICT services and outsourcing company.
Dr. Gültekin is the former president of the European Financial Management Association and the former dean of the College of Administrative Sciences and Economics at Koç University in Istanbul. He also served as associate director of the Management Decision Laboratory at New York University and as a research scientist at Boğazici University in Turkey.
He received his PhD in finance from New York University, his MA in operations management from Boğazici University and a BS in physics from Middle East Technical University.
Isin Guler Aran examines issues related to innovation strategy and international expansion. In her early work, she examined why venture capitalists fail to terminate investments in portfolio firms. Her recent publications have taken a social network approach to understanding why pharmaceutical firms achieve success in research and development. She also examines international expansion strategies of venture capital firms from a network perspective.
Dr. Guler Aran comes to UNC Kenan-Flagler from Sabanci University’s School of Management in Istanbul. She has previously held positions in UNC Kenan-Flagler and Boston University.
Her work has been published in prestigious research journals such as Administrative Science Quarterly, Academy of Management, Strategic Management Journal and Journal of International Business Studies.
Dr. Guler Aran is an editorial board member at Administrative Science Quarterly, Academy of Management, Organization Science and Strategic Management Journal.
She received her PhD in management from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, where she also earned her master’s degree in managerial science and applied economics. She received her MBA and her bachelor’s degree in management from Middle East Technical University.
Rajdeep Grewal is the Townsend Family Distinguished Professor of Marketing at UNC Kenan-Flagler.
His research interests are in studying social interactions among organizations and strategic marketing decisions. For these research problems he seeks to develop theoretically grounded empirical specifications and estimates classical econometric or Bayesian models.
An award-winning researcher, his work has appeared in top academic journals, including the Journal of Marketing, Journal of Marketing Research, Marketing Science and the Strategic Management Journal. He currently serves as co-editor for the Journal of Marketing Research and is area editor for the Journal of Marketing.
Dr. Grewal comes to UNC Kenan-Flagler from the faculty of Pennsylvania State University’s Smeal College of Business Administration, where he also served as associate director of the Institute for the Study of Business Markets. He also has taught at the Indian School of Business (Hyderabad and Mohali), Washington State University, Wharton School at University of Pennsylvania and University of Cincinnati.
He worked as a sales executive for Pertech Computers Limited in Delhi before he attended graduate school.
He received his PhD in marketing with a minor in econometrics from the University of Cincinnati, where he also earned a master’s of science in business administration in quantitative analysis. He received a post-graduate diploma in management from the Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow, and a B.Tech in textile technology from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi.
