Announcing the 2026 Grand Challenge: What Are the Three Big Questions Behind Renegotiating Work?

Each year, the Kenan Institute’s Grand Challenge takes on a pressing economic issue. This year is no exception. As 2026 begins, employers and employees alike are contending with a complex mix of forces, including a softening job market, rapid technological advancement and policy uncertainty. Together, these forces are redefining workplace expectations and, in many cases, testing how workers and leaders align and adapt.

In response to this moment, we’re excited to announce the 2026 Grand Challenge: Renegotiating Work—Balancing Workplace Demands in Uncertain Times. An initiative that brings together research, thought leaders, and fresh perspectives to look beyond the headlines and better understand how work is changing — and how organizations can not only adapt, but move forward.

Watch the Grand Challenge announcement video for an exclusive look at the themes our experts will explore throughout this year’s challenge.
