John Haltiwanger: Why Business Formation Surged During the Pandemic

Please join us for “Surging Business Formation in the Pandemic: Causes and Consequences,” a talk by Kenan Institute Distinguished Fellow John Haltiwanger, Dudley and Louisa Dillard Professor of Economics at the University of Maryland.

The hourlong event will take place at 12:30 p.m. EDT Thursday, April 27, in Kenan Center Room 204.

Applications for new businesses surged starting in mid-2020 and continued at a high level through January 2023. Historically, a jump in new applications is associated with increased creation of employer businesses, innovation and productivity growth. Haltiwanger’s will discuss implications for the continuing restructuring of the U.S. economy associated with this surge.

Haltiwanger is a member of the 2023 class of Kenan Institute Distinguished Fellows. Together they comprise an exemplary set of global scholars committed to leveraging their individual expertise, thought leadership, research and networks to further the institute’s efforts to examine and drive solutions to issues facing business and the economy today. This year’s class will support the institute’s 2023 grand challenge: Workforce Disrupted: Seeking the Labor Market’s Next Equilibrium.

The event is free and open to the public but registration is required, as lunch will be provided for all attendees.
