New Jobs Data and the 2026 Economic Outlook: January Economic Briefing

CHAPEL HILL, NC (January 7, 2026) — The government shutdown had us playing catchup during Q4 with several months of missing or incomplete employment data. We are back on track with updated jobs numbers. Join institute Chief Economist Gerald Cohen as he offers analysis of the fresh numbers during the institute’s monthly briefing at 9 AM EST Friday, January 9.

Cohen will also preview his annual Five Trends commentary, to be published next Tuesday, which will feature questions about the economy, artificial intelligence, the Federal Reserve and other topics that will be on the minds of business leaders and policymakers in 2026.
