Byron Kelly

I was born and raised in Newfoundland, Canada, and obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Earth Science from Memorial University of Newfoundland. After I graduated from Memorial University, I enrolled in the University of Calgary’s Masters of Geophysics Program as a graduate student within the Consortium for Research in Elastic Wave Exploration Seismology. My Master’s Thesis was focused on applying geophysical techniques to enhance oil field production within the Canadian Oil Sands. After graduate school, I spent three years working within the Canadian Energy Industry before returning to business school to pursue an MBA

Career Path

Upon graduation from the University of Calgary I went to work for Nexen Energy, a large Canadian E&P firm, within their New Graduate Development Program. My time at Nexen Energy was primarily focused within various Canadian Oil Sands Assets. As a new graduate, I developed technical geophysics and engineering skills, while gaining exposure to various aspects within the upstream component of the oil and gas industry. As my new graduate training program ended, I realized that a strong knowledge base in business and management would complement my technical skill set and enhance my professional development, and hence spurred my transition to business school.

My academic and career path has always retained some aspect of research. During my time at the University of Calgary, I published numerous papers and conference presentations as a component of my thesis. While at Nexen, I spoke at numerous internal and external conferences, advocating for the application of advanced technologies. Subsequently, I co-authored a Canadian and US Patent for predicting oil production, and co-authored a research report on cutting-edge geophysical techniques. As a Kenan Scholar, I am broadening my knowledge base of both business and the energy industry as I join a research team focused on evaluating the economic feasibility of solar energy.

Interests and Hobbies

I am a fitness and health oriented person. I have been an avid basketball player all my life, and still find time to enjoy the sport as often as I can. I am also interested in weight lifting, and plan to compete in my first powerlifting competition in 2017 as an amateur.
