Chapel Hill, N.C. (June 1, 2020) — A panel of experts convened by UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School and its affiliated Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise will be offering a press briefing via webinar on the disruption caused by COVID-19 on local, national and global supply chains. Some level-setting facts touching specifically on the pandemic’s effects on our food supply chain are included in this fact sheet. Join tomorrow, Tuesday, June 2, at 11 a.m. EDT to hear from the following experts:

UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School Professor Chloe Glaeser will discuss the pandemic’s effects on food supply chains, covering the differing impacts on grocery stores versus restaurants as well as the evolving landscape for food delivery services such as Instacart and UberEats.

UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School Professor Ali Parlaktürk will provide his take on the massive shift in retail consumer behavior driven by COVID-19, as well as the implications of these changes for retailers.

Zooming out a bit, UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School Professor Jayashankar Swaminathan will offer lessons learned on global supply chain management and risk during the crisis, exploring the sourcing dilemma many businesses now face of offshoring or nearshoring as well as the resulting implications for the U.S. business community—and economy—now and in future.

And Grant Thornton National Supply Chain Practice Leader Jonathan Eaton will share his perspective on supply chain reshoring and provide guidance on the optimal tax-effective supply chain planning framework—touching on strategic, operational, risk mitigation and tax-based components. He will also share insights on the vital elements of policy that should be included in possible legislation, with a particular focus on implications for the pharmaceutical industry.

Each speaker will provide a brief overview from his or her respective area of expertise, citing applicable emerging research and data, before the floor is opened for questions from the press. For a link to participate, email MacKenzie Babb.
