On Sept. 9-11, the 2019 Black Communities Conference convened at the Carolina Theatre in downtown Durham, North Carolina, to foster collaboration among Black communities and universities for the purpose of enhancing Black community life and furthering the understanding of communities of the African diaspora.

Eminent economist Arvind Panigariya has appointed UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School Adjunct Professor of Finance Anusha Chari and 2018 Weatherspoon Lecturer Jagdish Bhagwati to a new initiative which brings together policy experts and academicians from distinguished universities to contribute to substantive economic policy analyses on issues confronting the Indian economy. These analyses can further help develop a reform agenda for the government to be elected in the 2019 national polls. The news of the appointments was featured in the Economic Times.
This paper examines how US immigration-induced labor mobility frictions affect entrepreneurship and firm monopsony. I exploit a natural experiment in the US immigration system that unexpectedly increased Green Card (GC) related job-switching frictions for Indian and Chinese immigrants in October 2005. Using matched employee-employer data from LinkedIn, I confirm that this shock reduced inter-firm employee mobility for Indian and Chinese employees.
In addition to academic presentations, the Conference on Market-Based Solutions for Reducing Wealth Inequality took participants out of the classroom and into the community for a walking tour and on-site discussions in nearby Durham, N.C.
To consider how creative ideas/outcomes arise, it is necessary to provide a definition of creativity. There are as many definitions of this term as there are authors providing these definitions. For our purposes, creativity will be defined as outcomes or processes that are not only new/different but also perceived as useful to those in an organizational setting.
Many authors have suggested that situational judgment tests (SJTs) are useful tools for assessing applicants because SJT items can be written to assess a number of job-related knowledges, skills, abilities and other characteristics (KSAOs). However, SJTs may not be appropriate for measuring certain KSAOs for some applicants.
The use of simulation methods is not very common in accounting research, even though several authors have pointed to the advantages these methods offer in addressing accounting research questions. In this position paper, I discuss the difficulties encountered when applying simulation methods in accounting research.
Retailers routinely allow consumers to negotiate a discount off the posted price for big-ticket items such as home appliances and automobiles, and on online platforms such as Amazon and eBay. The profitability of such a strategy, relative to selling only at posted prices, depends on consumers’ willingness to initiate a negotiation and ability to negotiate a discount. In this article, the authors incorporate consumers’ decision of whether to negotiate into a demand model.
The authors study the drivers and performance implications of retailers’ branding strategies for their premium and economy private-label tiers. Retailers can opt for store-banner branding and use their store-banner name and/or logo to reveal their ownership, or they can use stand-alone branding and avoid an explicit link between store brand and retail banner.
In this study, the authors conduct a systematic investigation on the evolution in the effectiveness of two important marketing mix instruments, advertising and price, over the business cycle. Analyses are based on 163 branded products in 37 mature CPG categories in the UK, and this for a period of 15 years. The data are a combination of (i) monthly national sales data, (ii) monthly advertising data, (iii) data on the general economic conditions, and (iv) consumer survey data.
In diverse industries, from grocery retailing to health care, retailers join buying groups to achieve better terms with suppliers. The authors track the buying group membership of Europe's largest grocery retailers over a 15-year period and evaluate why some buying groups are better than others in increasing retailer performance and why different members belonging to the same group do not always benefit equally from their membership.
The sales lead black hole—the 70% of leads generated by marketing departments that sales representatives do not pursue—may result from competing demands on sales reps' time. Using the motivation-opportunity-ability framework, the authors consider factors that influence sales reps' pursuit (or lack thereof) of marketing and selfgenerated leads.
Marketers create social media, in the form of firm-generated content (FGC), to ignite interest in new products such as movies; in turn, there is a clear need to understand whether and how FGC influences demand. With a descriptive study, the authors investigate two potential mechanisms by which FGC may drive box office revenues.
In recent years, institutional investors have progressively depended on higher returns from private markets. As a result, there's been an increase in competition for quality investment. In a recent Economist special report on the topic, Institute for Private Capital Research Director Greg Brown and his co-authors' study on private asset returns is featured.
Research by the institute-affiliated UNC Tax Center shows just six publicly traded U.S. companies, including Amazon and Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc., would have paid half the estimated $32 billion in revenue generated by a 15% corporate minimum tax signed into law last month. “Who actually pays a lot is just not very many firms at all,” said Jeff Hoopes, Kenan-Flagler Business School professor and the center’s research director, who is one of the study’s authors. “My guess is it will not be the same firms every single year.”

In this second of a series of workshops taking place this year, students from the Kenan-Flagler Business School — including the newly admitted Kenan Scholars class of 2023 and MBA Kenan scholars class of 2022 — heard from professors Brad Hendricks and Breagin Riley, as well as PhD student Andre Martin and Postdoctoral Research Associate Ayana Younge about their experiences in research.
A surprisingly strong jobs report for June only adds to the difficulty of getting a read on the U.S. economy, writes Dan Barkin on the Business North Carolina site. He cites statistics offered by UNC Kenan-Flagler Professor Christian Lundblad in the institute’s July 8 economic briefing and notes Lundblad’s opinion that a “real” recession, rather than a technical recession, is more likely to arrive in early to mid-2023.
