Chapel Hill, N.C. (May 18, 2020) — A panel of experts convened by UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School and its affiliated Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise will be offering a press briefing via webinar on the vital role state governments have played in response to COVID-19, the significant variance we’ve seen in responses state by state, and what’s next as governors and state lawmakers work with the federal government to fund relief while working to balance their own budgets. Join tomorrow, Tuesday, May 19, at 11 a.m. EDT to hear from the following experts:

CREATE Director and UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School Professor Maryann Feldman will offer an overview of different governors’ response initiatives to COVID-19, providing a unique analysis that tells a surprisingly nonpartisan story.

Rethinc. Labs Faculty Director and UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School Professor Eric Ghysels will provide a forecast for state budgets through and beyond the pandemic, sharing a state-by-state and regional breakdown of the areas most affected along with his perspective on whether states should consider filing for bankruptcy.

UNC-Chapel Hill Political Science Professor Christopher Clark will discuss the fiscal response to COVID-19 by state legislatures, including an analysis of the role party control has and will continue to play in determining relief fund allocation.

N.C. Department of Health and Human Services Deputy Secretary Kody Kinsley will share a practitioner’s perspective on the crisis response, using North Carolina as a case study to explore how states are evolving their efforts to address the pandemic.

Each speaker will provide a brief overview from his or her respective area of expertise, citing applicable emerging research and data, before the floor is opened for questions from the press. For a link to participate, email MacKenzie Babb.
