Kenan Institute Welcomes UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School New Faculty
Chapel Hill, N.C. — The Frank Hawkins Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise hosted UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School’s annual new faculty dinner Thursday evening at the Kenan Center.
The institute, which supports the school’s outreach and research efforts, kicked off the event with an interdisciplinary seminar featuring a presentation by Professor Al Segars on his latest research, “Seven Technologies Remaking the World,” and discussion and Q&A facilitated by Professor Eric Ghysels.
Following that presentation, Professor Greg Brown, institute director, shared with the audience of more than 60 faculty the goals of the institute for the coming years.
“We have significantly expanded the scope of the institute’s partnership with the school, and are today working closely with faculty at Kenan-Flagler to increase the impact of the school’s research,” Brown said.

Professor Christian Lundblad, who serves as the Kenan Institute research director as well associate dean for the school’s Ph.D. program, shared the institute’s recent work to increase the number of research assistants available to business school faculty by actively pursuing a greater number of undergraduate, pre-doctoral, doctoral and post-doctoral researchers.
“One of the added benefits of our efforts, we believe, will be the opportunity to attract smart new people from other disciplines who may not be on a traditional business school or MBA path,” Lundblad highlighted. “These might include women and underrepresented minorities, and others from different disciplines who simply haven’t been exposed to business research.”
Professor Olga Hawn, the newly appointed faculty director for the institute’s affiliated Center for Sustainable Enterprise, said these efforts give Kenan-Flagler faculty a “unique competitive advantage” over other business schools.
Dean Doug Shackelford closed the program, offering an official welcome to new faculty and inviting the group to introduce themselves to the room.
