Chapel Hill, N.C. (July 27, 2020) — A panel of experts convened by UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School, its affiliated Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise and the Institute of African American Research will offer a press briefing via webinar on the intersection of the COVID-19 crisis and the Black Lives Matter movement—providing a framework for developing solutions to achieve equitable public health and economic outcomes for the short- and long-term. Join tomorrow, Tuesday, July 28, at 11 a.m. EDT to hear from the following experts:

Duke University Public Policy Ph.D. Candidate Ajenai Clemmonswho previously served as community relations ombudsman for the city of Denver, will discuss how policing and police-community relationships have fueled—and continue to fuel—the massive movement for Black lives. She’ll offer a number of proposed solutions, such as civilian oversight boards, outlining the components needed for such solutions to be effective.

City of Pittsburgh Deputy Chief of Staff and Chief Equity Officer Majestic Lane will share how Pittsburgh and other cities are navigating the global social movement for racial justice and equality—particularly as it relates to community and economic development.

Center for Responsible Lending Executive Vice President Nikitra Bailey will offer insights on how lending practices, housing policy and the looming rental crisis are affecting African-Americans’ ability to handle the health and economic impacts of COVID-19.

CREATE Executive Director and Black Communities Conference Co-founder Mark Little will speak about the ways in which some Black communities are turning inward to rely on their own institutions and history—both for present-day survival and for building a more resilient future economy.

Each speaker will provide a brief overview from his or her respective area of expertise, citing applicable emerging research and data, before the floor is opened for questions from the press.
